Edna’s Diary:
Writing again after Stroke
By EDNA MILES
Cambridge, Sam&Sam, 2021, 36 pp.
The author (1920-2009) had a stroke in 2002 that left her with only 20% of her language faculty. She began NHS language therapy and two years later had achieved 89% language command. A vital part of her recovery was writing a diary. From just a few lines a day, the diary took off and Edna kept it for the rest of her life. This book is a selection of both funny and thought-provoking entries covering everything from her daily life in a small town, cookery and friends to gardens, royalty, news and views. The book has been described by stroke survivors and NHS therapists as ‘inspirational’. All proceeds from its sale are donated to Stroke Association UK.
